ACY Site of State’s Hurricane Readiness Drill

If you see a fleet of helicopters buzzing around Atlantic City International Airport Saturday morning (May 20), you don’t have to call for an emergency response. Emergency crews are already on the scene -– for a hurricane evacuation exercise.

Teams from NJ State Police, Army National Guard, U.S. Coast Guard and the Eastern Region Helicopter Council (volunteers from the private sector) will conduct the drill from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The headquarters will be the SJTA Snow Equipment Building near the headquarters of NJANG 177th Fighter Wing, off Tilton Road in Egg Harbor Township.

Helicopters will be unloading volunteers portraying rescue workers and picking up others playing the role of victims. A NJANG UH60 Blackhawk helicopter will demonstrate its ability to scoop up and carry 1,200 gallons of water for emergency use. A U.S. Coast Guard HH65C Dolphin will demonstrate its 245-foot hydraulic hoist with a 600-pound lifting capacity.

The exercise is not open to the public. Hurricane season begins June 1.
