Severe Weather Alerts

During any severe weather event or other emergency, the SJTA remains in constant communication with relevant county and state Office of Emergency Management (OEM) representatives in order to provide any needed assistance. Atlantic County in particular, due to regular flooding and closing of area roadways including US 322/40 and US 30, is always at the forefront of SJTA concerns. When this occurs, the Atlantic City Expressway can be the main route to exit the City.

The SJTA, in conjunction with other State and County agencies, has developed a Contra-Flow (reverse lane) plan that has recently been updated to include the Garden State Parkway in the event of a major event that requires an evacuation of the region. This plan requires a declaration of a state of emergency by the Governor to implement and has been designed with an “all-hazards” approach. This is an emergency plan only and should not be confused with regular planning that occurs during extreme weather.

Some of the readiness steps taken by the Atlantic City Expressway during storms or other events include staffing the East Maintenance yard in Pleasantville, adding additional Emergency Service Provider (ESP) patrols, as well as added patrols conducted by the New Jersey State Police assigned to the Expressway.

Citizens should always be aware of weather and other events that may affect them. Click on one or more of the following website links for helpful information:
