Here's how it works:
When you set up an E-ZPass prepaid account, you receive a small electronic tag that attaches to your vehicle. Each time you use a toll facility where E-ZPass is accepted, an electronic antenna at the toll plaza reads the account information from your E-ZPass tag. The correct toll is then debited from your prepaid account. That's all there is to it!
The toll plaza uses sensors to detect the number of axles on your vehicle, so the appropriate toll is deducted. The Automatic Vehicle Identification antenna reads the account information on your E-ZPass tag, verifies the information (including your current account balance) and automatically deducts the toll from your account.
