HAMMONTON – Despite high gasoline prices, Atlantic City Expressway officials today predicted about a 3 percent increase in travelers on the roadway this holiday weekend and into the summer season.

Although the holiday weekend this year stretches through Tuesday, officials from the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which owns and operates the Expressway, are projecting that holiday related traffic will be up 3 percent over last year continuing the trend of growing visitor trips in the region.

In addition, officials are projecting that the total volume on the expressway for the entire summer season, from Memorial Day to Labor Day will increase overall by 3.5 percent, from approximately 15.4 million last year to about 15.9 million this summer.

The Authority released projections during the Grand Opening of the Donio’s Farm Market in the Expressway’s Frank S. Farley Service Area, attended by Authority officials. The farm market will be open through the summer offering a wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables, including Jersey corn, tomatoes, asparagus, lettuce and cucumbers.

“Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore continue to be a huge draw in the region,” said Frank Spencer, chairman of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which owns and operates the Expressway and the Atlantic City International Airport. “We have not seen a decrease in traffic heading to these hugely popular destinations. In fact, our numbers are growing.”

Acting SJTA Executive Director James R. Iannone said the Authority has already experienced increased traffic so far this season. Toll traffic on the Expressway increased by 7.5 percent during the Friday to Monday Memorial Day weekend.

It is expected that many of these visitors will pick up Jersey Fresh produce on their way to or from the Jersey shore.

“The farm market is just another of many amenities available to the Atlantic City Expressway traveler,” said Iannone, noting the HMS Host, the organization that manages the Farley Service area food concessions “offers great services and products and a clean and convenient service area for our patrons.”
