Three shore area artists featured in January ArtPort show

EGG HARBOR TWP. – The work of three shore area artists will be showcased in January at the new ArtPort Gallery located in the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY).

The works of Judith Saylor, of Linwood, Phyllis London, of Egg Harbor Township, and Betty Bembry, of Hammonton, are on display in the unique ArtPort gallery, which opened in the security screening area of the airport in September 2006. About 30,000 travelers a month move through ACY airport security.

While most of the gallery is located in the secure area reserved for air travelers, the public will have the opportunity to view the work of all three artists at a “Second Tuesday” gallery reception in the airport terminal from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9.

Information on upcoming ArtPort shows to be held on the second Tuesday of every month is available online at www.sjta.com.

“The ArtPort program was created to help support the local arts community and to enhance the flying experience for ACY customers,” said Bart Mueller, Executive Director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which owns and operates the airport. “ACY is known as an accessible, convenient and friendly place for travelers. The ArtPort program marks yet another effort by our staff to create a pleasurable traveling experience for our customers.”

“ArtPort presents a phenomenal opportunity for artists and art students to capture the attention of literally thousands of people moving through airport security on a monthly basis,” said area photographer Donna Connor, who heads the ArtPort selection committee.

The paintings of Egg Harbor Township artist Phyllis C. London deal primarily with the forces of nature, conveying these potent symbols and themes through exacting observations of light, shadow, color, and composition.
Ms. London was born into a family of boat designers and builders. Her career includes extensive work as a freelance illustrator for publications, designers, and private commissions as well as a staff illustrator for the Sands Hotel & Casino and the Trump Corporation. Her work has appeared in numerous publications and shows. Information about London’s work can be obtained by visiting www.phyllislondon.com

Judith A. Maddox Saylor, of Linwood, grew up on a farm in Gettysburg, Pa., where she began her observations of nature and began her life as an artist. Her love of tropical foliages and flowers began on a trip to Miami, Fla., nearly 40 years ago. Saylor’s work has been featured many times in galleries in both New Jersey and in Florida. She has lived in South Jersey for nearly 30 years and has a gallery in her Linwood home. Information about Saylor’s work can be obtained online at www.JAMSArtworks.com.

Betty Bembry has produced art throughout her life. Married at 17, she continued to produce art for the enjoyment of friends and family in between having children and working. About 10 years ago she decided to commit herself to producing and publicly displaying folk art derived from her life experiences. Bembry’s pastel drawings have been featured at the Hammonton Art Gallery and the African American Heritage Museum of South Jersey in Newtonville.

The Atlantic City International Airport has experienced an increase in passengers over the last several years, with about a million passengers moving through the airport annually. SJTA estimates that utilization of the airport could increase by double digits in the next couple of years with the expected addition of new airlines and new airline routes.

In order to accommodate this expected growth, the Authority is in the midst of a major expansion and improvement program. Among the improvements the Authority has made are full instrument guidance on Runways 13 and 31, a new taxiway, improved lighting on the flight ramps, and construction of a new baggage screening and sorting structure to house security equipment for the Transportation Security Administration and give the airlines more space for efficient loading of flights. Included in this project is installation of a second escalator near the baggage claim area, which will improve terminal traffic flow for travelers.
