SJTA honors Board member Madelyn Rumowicz

With a special resolution, commissioners of the South Jersey Transportation Authority honored the service of one of their own.

Madelyn Rumowicz does not appear on the formal list of board members, since she is the designate of Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere, but Authority Chairman Frank Spencer said her steady service since returning from her first retirement from DOT in 2003 has seen the SJTA through unprecedented growth and development.

"Her knowledge and her guidance have been invaluable," Spencer said.

Actually, her involvement with SJTA goes back a lot further, Ms. Rumowicz said at the Dec. 13 board meeting. As the late state Sen. Walter Rand's chief aide, she played a significant role in drafting the enabling legislation that created the Authority in 1991.

Commissioner Louis Toscano said he knew that for a fact. "I was there too, working for the (Atlantic City) mayor's office," he noted.

Ms. Rumowicz, who lives in Ewing Township, Mercer County, says she has no plans for retirement -- noting that she wasn't allowed to stay retired the first time.
