SJTA Division Receives Contract to Provide Veterans' Transportation Services

A division of the South Jersey Transportation Authority was awarded a contract to connect veterans to their health care. The program was made possible by a $50,000 state grant obtained through the efforts of State Sen. Fred Madden and Assemblyman David Mayer (both D-4th District).

Carole Miller, director of the SJTA Transportation Services Division, will receive a down-payment check from Camden County Clerk Jim Beach and Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli. Senator Madden and Assemblyman Mayer will attend Thursday’s event.

The ceremony will initiate Transportation Services’ participation in a program that guarantees any veteran in Camden and Gloucester counties access to a VA facility or other health care five days a week. Gloucester County will provide the transport two days a week, and Transportation Services will provide it the other three days. Disabled veterans will be offered door-to-door service. Other veterans will be transported from the Veterans Affairs office in Magnolia.

The SJTA’s Transportation Services Division now provides shuttle service at Atlantic City International Airport, between parking and retail shopping-entertainment in Atlantic City and to connect hundreds of workers to their places of employment in the six-county region that the SJTA is responsible to serve. Its annual passenger volume reflects its growing mission -- 113,974 passengers in 2004, nearly doubling the 64,341 recorded in 2003.

ADVISORY TO EDITORS: The award ceremony will take place Thursday (Aug. 11) at 1 p.m. in the Camden County Veterans Affairs offices, 315 South White Horse Pike, Magnolia. It will be attended by disabled veterans, who can explain the importance of the service to them.
