SJTA Firefighters teaching colleagues trench rescue

Firefighters from the tri-state area and even further are gathering at Atlantic City International Airport to learn how to dig their way out of a hole – safely.

The one-day, eight-hour course has drawn a class of 25 firefighters on Tuesday Oct. 4 and a different 25 on Wednesday. It is being offered in conjunction with this year’s annual meeting of the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Atlantic City and is one of several other courses being offered around the county. The FDIC expects 4,500 firefighters from the tri-state area and throughout the eastern United States Oct. 4-8.

A frequent construction-site accident is the collapse of a trench or well hole, usually without warning. The firefighters will be instructed in techniques of shoring up a collapsed earthen wall and safely removing any injured workers, said Chief Bernie Nay of the airport Fire Department.

The conference is sponsored by the PennWell Corp. of Tulsa, Okla., publishers of Fire Engineering, a monthly magazine that dates back to 1877. It provides training, education and management information for fire and emergency services personnel worldwide.

The Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) provides training for firefighters in several locations worldwide, including "HOT" (Hands-on-Training) sessions, such as the trench collapse course. The conference provides a forum for the best instructors to train firefighters, learn from each other, and discover new products and services that help save lives. FDIC is located in Indianapolis, Ind., and was founded in 1929.
