Expressway message boards go mobile

The new ESP truck equipped with a VMS.
The SJTA’s newest Emergency Service Patrol truck (No. 461) is now equipped with a full-size Variable Message Sign (VMS) that will allow Expressway officials to bring a message closer to an accident scene or major traffic problem. When this truck hits the road next week, it will make the Authority among the first in the state to offer this new level of service.

“We have 15 VMS signs between the Roadway and Connector in mostly permanent spots. It is not always easy to communicate to motorists in the exact spot of where a problem is, or to properly detour them. Now we will be better able to do this,” said Expressway Manager Chuck Chiarello. “We actually have five new VMS units that will go on the five newest ESP trucks. This will allow us to have at least one truck-mounted VMS on the roadway 24/7.”

A second truck is now being adapted, and in the next month or two, all five will be operational. This will give the SJTA the ability to better serve Atlantic City Expressway patrons.
