Construction of the 44.5-mile Atlantic City Expressway (ACE) began in 1962 to connect the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia metropolitan area with Atlantic City and other South Jersey shore communities. Its Atlantic City connection was completed in 1965. The Expressway operates a total of 47 miles of roadway as of 2001, when the Atlantic City Brigantine Connector was completed. The Expressway also provides routine maintenance along a seven-mile portion of Route 42 which includes snow removal, litter removal and mowing of grass. Emergency Service Patrol (ESP) vehicles are available on the roadway as a courtesy to ACE motorists. In 2023, over 28K vehicles were provided service. The Operations Department is responsible for the Expressway and oversees roadway maintenance, signage, fleet, crafts, janitorial and the Emergency Service Patrol.
